TRICARE, When To Seek Emergency Care !

When should you seek emergency care? When Medical conditions can't be treated at home or with a visit to the Doctor's office. The following quide lines can help you with these questions.
Some conditions clearly require treatment in an emergency room. Emergency conditions include loss of consciousness, convulsions, shortness of breath, chest pain, uncontrolled bleeding, poisoning suicide-atteempts,drug-overdose, severe mental health problems and other acute conditions. Pregnancy-related medical emergencies involve a sudden or unexpected medical complication that puts the Mother, the Baby or Both at risk.
If you experiance a medical emergency like this, you should seek immediate medical attention. Go to the nearest facility that is equipped to handle your situation.
In cases of true emergencies, TRICARE covers you for emergency medical services,
WHEREVER YOU ARE and NO MATTER WHICH PLAN YOU USE, TRICARE Prime, Extra, or Standard.
EMERGENCY care DOES NOT require a prior authorization, although TRICARE PRIME members ( or someone acting in their behalf ) should call their PRIMARY CARE MANAGER with in 24 Hours of receiving care to ensure maximum coverage and assure accurate claims processsing.

Non-Emergency Medical Conditions !

Other conditions are clearly not emergencies. These conditions include COLDS, FLU, STOMACH-ACHES, HEAD-ACHES, and MINOR INJURIES. Conditions such as these should normally be treated at home or with a visit to your Doctor or Primary Care Manager. If you suspect you may be Pregant or have a serious illness, you should make an appointment to see your Doctor.
TRI-CARE considers the emergency room an inappropiate place for routine care, where the beneficiary's medical condition never is, or never appeared to be an emergency.
When TRICARE Prime beneficiaries seek treatment in an emergency room with out a referral from their Primary Care Manager for conditions that are clearly routine, their care is covered under the Point of Services option, which does result in more expensive cost sharing.
When you are unsure how to treat an illness, you should call your Doctor or, if you are a TRICARE Prime member, your Primery Care Manger TRICARE beneficiaries may also call the HEALTH CARE LINE,,1-800-333-5331,, ( Or The Number For Your Assigned Area ) for advice from a specially trained nurse counsel.
